dexter (RIP)
MUSE
Blind since birth, Dexter processed and responded to the world very differently to sighted dogs.
Dexter was a confident, happy-go-lucky little dog who loved the park and who just happened to be blind. He could often be found hanging out at the park with his friends Frieda and Lutz and all the gang. Dexter loved running off with other dogs’ toys and destroying them.
However, being blind means Dexter encountered many more negative experiences than his sighted friends. He bumped into things, missed social cues of other dogs and could easily get hurt if he was unable to get out of the way.
Luckily, Dexter has had a highly strengths-based upbringing, including six months of targeted confidence-building training before transitioning into scent detection. While he may have been blind, he was anything but disabled!
Dexter’s experiences often resonated with the challenges and triumphs of many of our clients making him a relatable and inspiring presence.
Dexter’s Role in Our Workshops and Coaching:
Emotional Support: Dexter’s affectionate nature provided comfort and reduced anxiety, creating a calming environment conducive to personal growth. Interacting with dogs like Dexter has been shown to alleviate stress and enhance social responsiveness in individuals with autism and ADHD and trauma.
Social Engagement: His playful interactions encouraged clients to engage socially, fostering communication skills and building confidence in a non-judgmental setting. Animals can serve as social catalysts, promoting interactions that might otherwise be challenging.
Inspiration and Resilience: Dexter’s ability to thrive despite his blindness served as a powerful metaphor for overcoming obstacles, inspiring clients to embrace their unique strengths and persevere through challenges.
